Remember Me!

 Luke 22:17-19

And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. And He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me

As a little girl, I remember every first Sunday, our church would take communion. I was so excited when I got baptized because I was able to truly partake in the Lord's Supper. It was always such a genuinely sacred time to me. I looked forward to the solemness of the moment. It was dichotomy of sorts - a heavy moment, but also filled with so much love. God loved us enough to send His ONLY son to die on the cross for our sins and give us eternal life (John 3:16).

As communion commenced, an old mother or deacon of the church would sing loudly in a passionate tone, "Remember Me. Remember Me. Oh Lord, Remember Me." The church would echo the old saints and repeat it three times - one time for the Father, one time for the Son and one time for the Holy Spirit. My heart would race as we sang the song. I didn't completely understand the mood of the church during those times, but I knew it was important. I knew it was a moment to honor and respect.

Years later, I would read the account of the thief hanging on the cross next to Jesus, asking him to "Remember Me". This is interesting for a few reasons. Jesus was being crucified because the people felt he was an imposer and not the King of the Jews. Yet this man that hung on the cross beside him had enough courage and foresight to see that this was the Messiah.

And even as Jesus hung on the old rugged cross, bleeding, in pain, crying out to his Father, God, He still showed His love and grace. In the midst of His pain and suffering, Jesus reassured the thief, "Today, you will join me in paradise" (Luke 23: 43).

So many times throughout the Bible God remembered His people. I can visualize Sister Hannah a childless, barren woman being teased by her husband's other wife because she was infertile. I can see her pouring her heart out so much that the priest, Eli, thought she was drunk. But then, God REMEMBERED Hannah (1 Samuel 1:19) and blessed her with a son.

The pages of the Bible are filled with people that God remembered. God REMEMBERED Noah (Genesis 8:1) and the waters subsided. God remembered Abraham and saved Lot from Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:29). God remembered Rachel, Issac's wife and opened her womb (Genesis 30:22). God remembered his covenant with Israel and established a great nation (Psalm 98:3).

Remember God - Today is a great day to reflect on Jesus and His journey to the cross for your salvation. Read any of the gospels and take that walk in your spirit mind of the last 48 hours that Jesus spent on earth. Remember how He would not come down from the cross, how He remained silent when questioned by Pilate, how He bore the sins of the world just for you and me, how He asked God to forgive those who persecuted Him. But also remember the third day - when He got up with ALL power in His hands. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome - Nehemiah 4:14

Ask God to Remember you - There are some things, circumstances, or people, that you have prayed about for years. Maybe you are like Hannah and have been barren for a while, maybe not physically, but spiritually. Perhaps you are like Lot, Abraham's nephew and you have gotten yourself into a difficult situation. maybe you are like Joshua and you have an insurmountable battle to fight. Perhaps you are like Judas and have betrayed a friend for money or worldly possessions. Or maybe you are one of the ones who has sacrificed it all for God. You have been obedient to His word, followed His plan, and yet things are still not going as you thought they would

Be encouraged today. God remembers. He is faithful. Hath he said it, shall he not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good (Numbers 23:19). Whisper a prayer and ask God to remember you. He will do it. He always remembers His children. He knows you and loves you. He remembers every prayer that you've prayed and bottles up every tear that you've cried (Psalm 56:8). He remembers His word and He promises that it cannot return void (Isaiah 55:11).
