Hold That Thought

Hold That Thought!

2 Corinthians 10:5

Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.

The other day, I had a thought that ran into another thought, that ran into another thought, that ran into another thought. And before long, I spiraled out of control and into my thoughts. Lost in the worst of the worst and creating an environment of fear in my mind that held me captive, I was so nervous by the end of my thought process that I wanted to run in the house, climb in my bed and curl myself into a ball, and hide under the covers, for fear that my thoughts would come true.

Have you ever had one of those moments, days, weeks, months or years, when you were just waiting on the very thing that you thought to come true? Our thoughts are powerful! It is no wonder that in 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul tells us to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." What are you thinking? Is it obedient to Christ?

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone and they need to grab a phone call or interrupt you for any reason and they say, "Hold that thought." That means stop where you are until they can give you their full attention. But in this case, hold that negative thought and then throw it completely away, as far as you can.

Satan's battlefield is in the mind. He toys with your thoughts to make them seem real. We don't fight the regular every day fights. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal. That means that we are not a fighting human or fleshly fight. We fight a spiritual battle that begins and ends in the mind. Again I ask what are you thinking?

Paul said in Philippians 4:8, Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - think on these things. Another translation says, mediate on these things. To mediate means to think deeply and carefully.

The Bible not only tells us to take the thought captive, but it also tells us how to take it captive. Switch your thoughts. The moment you start thinking the negative thought, grab it, take hold of it, and pull it to the obedience of Jesus Christ. Start thinking about the positive things, the true things, the lovely things, the virtuous things, and keep thinking on those things.

So when satan tries to tell you that you aren't loveable because of your past, reply back with scripture. No, that’s not true, God loves me with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3). When satan whispers that you can't succeed or do anything right, reply back with Philippians 4:13... I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. When satan says that your future looks bleak and you will not amount to anything, remind him of Jeremiah 29:11. When he whispers that you are defeated, reply back, "I am more than a conqueror, though Christ who loved me" (Romans 8:37).

You see how the process works now? As soon as a thought hits that does not fall into line with Philippians 4:8 (true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent and praiseworthy), you have the right to take hold of that negative thought and replace it with a positive thought.

Your thoughts matter. They turn into your conversations, your habits and eventually your lifestyle. You can't allow the devil to get a hold of your mind and your thoughts. You are in a daily fight to take those negative thoughts captive. As you go through this week and satan starts to play with your mind, remember to hold that thought! You are loved, you are forgiven and you are covered in the blood of Jesus.
